Are examples available of project outcomes written in concise lay language?

Yes, summary of R01HL066004 is an example of an acceptable project outcome response.

Will the progress report contained in the competing renewal application serve in lieu of a separate final progress report?

Per NOT-OD-17-037, effective February 9, 2017 the NIH will not maintain the current Type 2 policy in accordance with NIHGPS Chapter 8.6.2 which states that “whether funded or not funded” the progress report contained in the Type 2 application may serve in lieu of a separate final progress report.

Is the Interim-RPPR still required for renewal applications that have already been submitted and awarded prior to February 9, 2017?

No, if a renewal application was funded prior to February 9th the recipient will not be required to complete the Interim-RPPR. In addition, the recipient will not have the option to complete the Interim-RPPR in eRA Commons as the policy was made effective on February 9, 2017.

However, if a renewal application was submitted prior to February 9th but subsequently not funded until after February 9th then the recipient will be required to complete the Interim-RPPR.

In section B.2. What was accomplished under these goals? Should this section report on the accomplishments since the last annual RPPR was submitted, or should it contain a synopsis of the accomplishments over the entire multiyear project?

The accomplishments provided in Section B.2 should report on the accomplishments since the last annual RPPR was submitted.

Section B.3. Supplement Aims and Progress: Should this section report on the progress of supplement(s) since the last annual RPPR was submitted, or should it contain a synopsis of the activities and outcomes of the supplements over the entire multiyear project?

The progress reported in Section B.3 should report on the progress since the last annual RPPR was submitted.

Section B.4. Training and Professional Development: Should this section describe trainee activities from the last year, or all of the trainees that worked on the project?

The information reported within Section B.4 should describe the training and professional opportunities provided since the last year of the project period, plus any no-cost extension period, if applicable.

Section D.1. Individuals who worked on the project: Should this section report on the individuals/staff from the past year of the project period or the whole project?

This section should report on the individuals/staff that worked on the project during the last budget period minus any approved no-cost extensions.

Section I. Outcomes: Please provide a description of what kind of information is expected and the level of detail required. Does this section have a page limit or a suggested page length? What is the difference between this section and B.2?

The data entry field is limited to 8,000 characters. But NIH encourages that the response be limited to a ½ page. The main differences between this and section B.2 are: 1) The information requested here is cumulative—i.e., for the entire project per period; and, 2) this section should be written for the general public (and it will be made public), whereas section B should address the technical, scientific accomplishments in relation to the project aims, and should be written for an audience of scientists in that particular field.
