First launched in 2022, the NIEHS HBCU-Connect Initiative is one designed to connect NIEHS more solidly with North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities. While all students are welcome, our primary goal was to reach freshmen and sophomore undergraduates who are particularly interested, or undecided, in STEM majors and careers to raise their awareness of NIH, NIEHS, and research training opportunities (i.e., NIH Summer Internship Program, NIEHS Scholars Connect Program). This was also an effort to raise the awareness of faculty and staff so that they may share information regarding opportunities at NIEHS with students, but also included the sharing of information regarding funding mechanisms and possible opportunities for partnerships and collaborations.
HBCU-Connect Day, one aspect of the Initiative, was an opportunity to visit the NIEHS campus, to learn more about the Institute, training, and careers paths; and to hear from NSCP Scholars who were completing the academic-year program and presented their research during the Annual NSCP Symposium.
