Meeting Purpose

The NIEHS-funded ONES and RIVER programs represent the NIEHS efforts to support the most talented early-stage investigators who intend to make a long-term commitment to research in the Environmental Health Sciences as well as those with a potential for continued innovative and impactful environmental health research. This joint meeting provided a unique opportunity for grantees to network and interact, as well as a platform for them to share their research findings with each other and the NIEHS community.

Purpose and Scope of the Workshop

The ONES Award is designed to identify the best new biomedical investigators across the spectrum of science supported by the NIEHS (i.e., including basic mechanistic, clinical and population-based researchers) and facilitate their establishing a vibrant, independent research program in the environmental health sciences. This conference provided a face-to-face opportunity for the awardees to share information about their ongoing studies with each other and their program administrators, facilitating new collaborations, stimulating cross fertilization of ideas and possible solutions to common problems encountered as an early-stage investigator. In addition, the NIEHS RIVER awardees were invited to attend and participate. This provided the ONES awardees a unique opportunity to interact with experienced NIEHS-funded scientists that are conducting outstanding, innovative, and transformative research to advance the environmental health sciences using the R35 mechanism which provides intellectual and administrative freedom, as well as sustained support. Finally, this meeting allowed the NIEHS program administrators and institute scientists to hear about the latest research coming out of both researcher-focused programs.
