NIEHS Gift Fund and the Memorial Garden
Though the National Institute of Environmental Sciences (NIEHS) is not a fund-raising organization, the U.S. Congress has authorized NIEHS to accept donations and bequests to support the mission of the institute. Donations to NIEHS are deposited in a Gift Fund account, which is separate from Congressional appropriations.
While the gift acceptance authority does give NIEHS a mechanism to accept funds from outside sources, this authority does not authorize the solicitation of funds. Therefore, NIH policy prohibits employees, either directly or through another party, from requesting or suggesting donations to NIH or any of its components of funds or other resources intended to support activities, except grant funds as authorized by the Comptroller General in Decision B-255474 (03 April 1995).
Donations are used to support environmental health research. The following types of activities may be supported through the Gift Fund:
- purchase of equipment and supplies for laboratories
- research studies
- support of research workshops and conferences
- support of scientific staff recruitment efforts
Contributions can be made to the NIEHS Gift Fund by mailing a check or money order payable to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, along with a letter stating that the money is to be used to support the mission of NIEHS or a particular component of the mission.

NIEHS Memorial Garden
NIEHS has created a memorial garden through which co-workers can remember and honor former employees who have contributed to NIEHS, but who are no longer living, through donation of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants. Any former government employee of NIEHS may be remembered.
Donations may designate a specific tree, shrub, or plant, or they may be used for items to be placed in the garden. In addition, all donors have the option to have a plaque imprinted with the deceased individual's name placed on top of the wall in the Memorial Garden. All donations should include a letter of intent with the honoree’s name. All donations are acknowledged.
