The NIEHS Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Integrative Health Assessments Branch (IHAB) provides systematic literature review and evaluation capabilities for DTT and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). The Branch produces monographs and reports on cancer and noncancer health effects associated with exposures to environmental agents. IHAB also develops and publishes the congressionally mandated Report on Carcinogens.
DTT is a team-based, scientific organization whose mission is to improve public health through development of data and knowledge that are translatable, predictive, and timely. Building on DTT’s history of leadership in environmental health, IHAB collaborates with stakeholders to identify and address impactful environmental health questions to inform public health decision-making. Activities range from developing novel methods to conducting literature-based health hazard assessments on environmental substances. The Branch also organizes workshops that address technical issues related to substance evaluations or establish the state of the science for issues of importance in environmental health. DTT invites interested members of the public and other groups to nominate substances for possible listing in the Report on Carcinogens or for development of health assessment monographs.
IHAB develops and applies innovative informatic approaches to produce fit-for-purpose literature assessments, including evidence maps and scoping reviews, that provide timely support for health effects research. The Branch also advances approaches for systematic review and evidence integration for all types of data, with an increasing focus on the translation of mechanistic and predictive toxicology data.
To facilitate these activities, the IHAB is organized into two workgroups that work with a variety of DTT staff to accomplish program goals:
IHAB scientists contribute to NTP report and monograph series and publish findings in the NIEHS report series and peer-reviewed scientific literature. Staff publications can be viewed on the webpage.
