Young maples and a few dogwoods are growing here. Dogwoods are a common understory species in North Carolina that thrive in the partial shade of taller tree borders. The ravine/washout is evidence of erosion that occurred following forest clear-cutting over 50 years ago. Tree saplings are slowly becoming established in these formerly eroded areas.
