Virtual Workshop

NIEHS Autism Virtual Workshop June 21-22, 2022

Overview

The purpose of this meeting was to focus on the possible role of maternal diet and nutrition in mitigating the effects of environmental risks relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The workshop brought together environmental health scientists and nutrition researchers to cover a variety of topics, including mechanisms linking maternal nutrition and neurodevelopment, modifiers of environmental exposure, and methods for studying complex nutrient effects. Identifying mitigating influences of maternal diet and nutrition on ASD risk associated with other co-occurring environmental exposures could lead to important public health benefits. In cases where environmental exposures (e.g., air pollution) linked to ASD risk are difficult to reduce or prevent, targeted nutritional interventions may offer some protection against unavoidable chemical exposures.
