Fellows' Career Development

NIH requires a minimum of eight hours RCR training which must be completed within the first year of your fellowship. If additional or elective trainings are completed, it is the Fellow’s responsibility to notify the Office of Fellows’ Career Development (OFCD) upon completion (e.g., the Reproducibility Training, Introduction to “My Laboratory”).

Research Ethics Workshop: This training focuses on the topics of scientific integrity, publication and authorship, peer review, mentor-trainee relationship, and data acquisition and management.

Once, within the first year of arrival to NIEHS. The Workshop is offered virtually, bi-monthly for Fellows. Please see OITE Responsible Conduct of Research. Also, offered in-person twice per year (usually once in the Spring and once in the Autumn).

Research Mentor Training (RMT): Offered by the Office of Fellows’ Career Development. Class covers: establishing expectations & effective communications, understanding research ethics, writing a mentoring philosophy and more.3 hoursAnnually, four (4) classes that run from May to June.
Introduction to "My Laboratory": Training by Mentor in your group. Group lead/head discusses standard lab processes, expectations of behavior, record keeping, etc.1 hourOnce, soon after arriving to NIEHS.
Additional Elective Training Choices: Online videos (such as Reproducibility Training) or courses offered by the NIH library; specific courses tailored for clinical trainees; Bioethics lectures.1 hourElective
