Exposure, Response, and Technology Branch (ERTB)

Daniel Shaughnessy, Ph.D., joined the Division of Extramural Research and Training in 2006. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Carcinogenesis at NIEHS, he conducted research on the risks and protective effects of dietary factors on DNA damage in humans. He received a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002 and an MSPH degree from UNC in 2000, studying the molecular mechanisms of environmental mutagens and dietary antimutagens.

Shaughnessy manages a portfolio of grants related to DNA damage and repair and mutagenesis, effects of oxidative stress on mutagenic and carcinogenic pathways, and translation control of response to environmental stress. He also manages grants on the development and validation of biomarkers of response to environmental stress, with a continuing focus on early biomarkers of mitochondrial dysfunction and altered signaling in response to environmental stress. He is the program lead for the small business programs (SBIR/STTR) at NIEHS, focused on supporting small business grants for improved exposure assessment, predictive toxicology tools for hazard assessment, and intervention technologies to reduce exposure to environmental contaminants.

Shaughnessy is an active member of several Common Fund programs, including the NIH Common Fund program on Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT), the NIEHS-NCI Cancer and the Environment Working Group, and the trans-agency National Emerging Contaminants Research Initiative.
