Scientific Management and Stewardship - Resource Stewardship and Sustainability

NIEHS has a longstanding commitment to stewardship and sustainability in all its operations. NIEHS sustainability principles and actions further NIEHS’ scientific mission through effective and efficient management of utilities, supplies, and other resources that are critical to advancing innovative environmental health sciences research. NIEHS will continue this commitment for the duration of the 2025-2029 NIEHS Strategic Plan through the following approaches:

  • Continue to publish, every two years, a report on sustainability activities at its North Carolina campus, guided by federal orders and best practices.
  • Support stewardship of natural resources and maintain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) Platinum certification and ENERGY STAR-certified status for our net-zero energy warehouse.
  • Identify and pursue strategies that promote effective and efficient management of utilities, supplies, and other resources.
