Description:
Retention, Maintenance and Enhancement of the Communities Actively Researching Exposure Study (CARES) explores the impact of long-term manganese exposure on children’s neurodevelopment. CARES follows more than 600 youth and their primary caregivers living in three rural Appalachian Ohio communities and has recently expanded into Chicago, Illinois. Cohort Maintenance & Enrichment Activities:
Expanding to assess the role of caregiver, youth, and community-level psychosocial factors in manganese-induced neurodevelopmental deficits. Enhancing the characterization of critical windows of exposure and associated outcomes across the lifespan. Implementing community-engaged research strategies to improve participant retention.

Data Management & Sharing Activities:
Developing infrastructure and methods to strengthen data management systems and facilitate data sharing activities. Enhancing biorepository infrastructure.

Data Access:
Data will be accessed through a data sharing platform that is under development.
