Scott Masten, Ph.D., DABT is Director of the NTP’s Office of Nomination and Selection (ONS) in the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). He manages the process by which substances and issues are identified and selected for toxicological evaluation by the NTP. This involves liaison with federal agencies, the scientific community and the public to identify compelling toxicological research needs for substances and issues of human health concern, directing the preparation of supporting technical documents, coordinating internal and external public reviews of nominations, developing research projects and initiatives, and participating in the design of complex toxicological research programs.

In research prioritization and planning, Masten actively interfaces with a variety of stakeholders. He represents the NIEHS and NTP on several standing and ad hoc interagency coordinating groups including the TSCA Interagency Testing Committee, and working groups on asbestos, dietary supplements and exposure science. Masten is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and has broad research interests in toxicology testing strategies, predictive toxicology, alternatives assessment, and regulatory decision-making.

Masten received a B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Florida in 1995. He came to NIEHS in 1995 as a post-doctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology and Risk Analysis with research efforts focused on biomarkers of human exposure and response to dioxins and other hazardous environmental agents. He joined the NTP in 1998 as a Research Fellow and has been Director of the Office of Nomination and Selection since 2001.
