Each year, NIEHS celebrates all of our fellows during National Postdoctoral Appreciation week. This annual event is sponsored by the National Postdoctoral Association, and is endorsed by NIH as a way to honor and thank the trainees who carry out a very large percentage of research nationwide.
 Please see below for the types of activities we held at NIEHS in 2016.

September 15:

1:00 – 4:00 p.m. | INC Research/iVH Health ELITE Consortium Site Visit: Join us for an industry site visit to INC Research/iVH Health. You will learn about the company’s business structure, gain an overview of drug development, learn how a project goes through a complete life cycle, and have a half-hour of networking. This is a great opportunity to build industry relationships and expand your network.

All Day:

Laboratory & Branch Celebrations: We are encouraging individual laboratories and branches to do something special to celebrate fellows on Friday, September 15. Submit photos of your lab events to and tell us what you are doing! Suggested events might include an ice cream social, lab lunch outing, etc.

September 18:

9:30 a.m. | NIEHS Cafeteria | Coffee and Pancake Breakfast: All fellows are welcome to join us in the cafeteria to kickoff National Postdoc (& ALL Fellows!) Appreciation Week. Bring your coffee mug and your appetite! NOTE: Food made possible by generous PI donations; No government funds will be used to purchase food.

12:00 p.m. | A262 | New Fellows’ Orientation with the NIEHS Office of Fellows’ Career Development, OITE Career Services, and NIEHS Library: Are you new to NIEHS & wondering how to make the most of your time here? Do you want to learn more about the professional development resources that are available? Are you interested in becoming more involved in the trainee community? If so, please join us during Fellow Appreciation Week to learn more... and come prepared with your questions!

2:00 – 3:30 p.m. | E450 | Workshop: Building Resilience in the Job Search, at Work, and Throughout Life: Finding ways to stay positive, optimistic and productive are important components to being an effective job seeker. This workshop focuses on building confidence during your search, enhancing optimism and resilience, and challenging individuals to find value in the experiences that don’t go as planned. This workshop will share strategies and resources for maximizing successes and minimizing disappointments in the job search, at the research bench and in all areas of life.

September 19:

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | E226 | Teaching at the College Level-Peer Review of Teaching Philosophy Statements: For ‘week 8’ of the 9-week “Teaching at the College Level” course, we will join together and provide feedback on each other’s teaching philosophy statements. Whether this is your first or eighth class, all are welcome to this interactive session!

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. | F193 & WebEx | FAES Health Insurance Orientation: Join us as we speak with representatives from the Foundation for Advancing Education in the Sciences. They will address changes to your insurance policy and answer any questions you may have. Note that insurance open enrollment this year is September 11-22.

September 20:

10:00 a.m. | Keystone Building, Room 1003 | Coffee Hour: Join us in Keystone for coffee and treats during fellow appreciation week. Bring your own mug!

12:30 p.m. | International Potluck Celebration: Please bring a dish, dessert, or other treat native to your country or US Geographic region. Come sample a diversity of goodies from around the world! (Family and kid-friendly event)

September 21:

12:00 p.m. | TWO Professional Development Brown Bag Lunch Options: 1) Agricultural Biotechnology with guests Samuel Gattis, Ph.D., and Barbara Wedel, Ph.D. 2) Tenure-Track Academic Positions with guests Jennifer Ingram, Ph.D. & Rebecca Fry, Ph.D.: On the third Thursday of each month, the Brown Bag Lunch highlights a different set of PhD careers to provide fellows the opportunity to meet with a few individuals with firsthand experience. In contrast to the Career Symposium, the lunch provides an informal and more intimate atmosphere for you to ask questions or just hear more about the career you want!

2:30 p.m. | Rodbell Auditorium | Postbac Fellow Cookie Social and Meet & Greet: Join us for cookies and a chance to meet other postbacs!

4:30 p.m. | Hickory Tavern | 1156 Parkside Main Street, Cary | Evening Happy Hour & Alumni Mixer: Come join us to celebrate the next-to-last day of appreciation week over an evening of drinks and appetizers at Hickory Tavern! (Purchase Your Own) Please pass along this invitation to any NIEHS alumni you may know!

12:30 p.m. | Rodbell Auditorium & Lobby | Pizza Party, General Assembly Meeting, Group Photo, Resource Expo, & 8th Annual Trivia Challenge!: Come join your fellow trainees on Friday, September 22 to finish off Postdoc/Fellow Appreciation week with pizza and trivia!
