A potential erosion problem is being avoided through the natural growth of numerous lichens, mosses, and herbaceous vegetation that stabilize the cooler, shaded, north-facing slope. These species do well in compacted, moist, shaded, and acidic soils. Fallen trees add to the nutrient pool.
