NIH Summer Research Experience Programs (R25)

The NIEHS awards NIH R25 Summer Research Experience Program grants to eligible universities and institutions of higher education to provide research experiences in the environmental health sciences for high school students, undergraduate college students, and science teachers during the summer academic break.

NIH and NIEHS expect that these programs will:

  • Help attract young students to careers in science.
  • Provide opportunities for college students to gain valuable research experience to help prepare them for graduate school.
  • Enable science teachers to communicate the nature of the scientific process more effectively to their students.
  • Encourage individuals from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to pursue further studies or careers in research.

The Summer Research Program provides students and teachers the opportunity to engage in hands-on research programs with participating faculty. Program participants also benefit from educational courses and seminars designed to impart an appreciation of research on the environmental impacts on human health. Both the research and educational experiences focus on how environmental exposures affect human health and disease.
