Through the NIH Summer Research Experience Program, NIEHS awards grants to universities and institutions of higher education to provide research experiences in the environmental health sciences for high school students, college undergraduates, and science teachers during the summer academic break.
The goals of the program are to:
- Help attract young students to careers in science.
- Enable science teachers to communicate about the scientific process more effectively to their students.
- Encourage individuals from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to pursue further studies or careers in research.
- Provide college students a valuable research experience to help prepare them for graduate school.
NIEHS R25 Summer Research Programs provide students and teachers the opportunity to engage in research projects with established environmental health scientists. Program participants also benefit from educational courses and seminars designed to impart an appreciation of research exploring how the environment affects human health. Both the research and educational experiences focus on how environmental exposures affect human health and disease.
