Director's Letter

The NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) is committed to protecting health by reducing exposures to hazardous substances in the environment. Cleaning up contaminated sites is one way to reduce exposures. Such cleanup is complicated and requires rigorous science, expertise in multiple disciplines, and sustainable approaches.

Features

NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) individual research projects were in the spotlight during the Spring 2022 SRP Progress in Research Webinar series. These projects received funding in 2020 in response to a call for applications for work that combines materials science and engineering approaches with bioremediation science.

Science Leadership

SRP staff published a Perspective in Environmental Science & Technology synthesizing the experiences of 19 collaborative projects focused on data management and integration to advance the interoperability and reuse of diverse SRP data streams. The publication describes common challenges and opportunities to address complex environmental health problems through integrating data.

Hot Off the Press

University of Iowa SRP Center researchers, led by center director Keri Hornbuckle, Ph.D., discovered toxic breakdown products of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in contaminated sediments at proportionally higher levels than found in commercial PCB mixtures.

Technology Profile

NIEHS Superfund Research Program-funded small business RemBac Environmental, LLC., developed a remediation technology to treat sediments contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The technology uses activated carbon pellets containing microorganisms to degrade PCBs in sediments.
