NIEHS established a presence at the NIH Clinical Center with the Environmental Autoimmunity Group. Researchers are studying the mechanisms involved in the development of autoimmune diseases as well as genetic and environmental factors. Research focuses on systemic rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupas erythematosus, scleroderma and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies - diseases marked by chronic inflammation. EAG studies also focus on developing clinical tools and innovative therapies for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
