NIEHS is one of the many NIH institutes that participate in the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) for Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships, also known as the F32 program. Through these fellowships, NIEHS supports training opportunities for scientists working in environmental health sciences.

NRSA F32 fellowships provide up to three years of support for promising postdoctoral researchers who have the potential to become productive, independent investigators within the broad scope of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research. Before the postdoctoral fellowship award can be activated, the individual must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent research degree, or a professional degree such as M.D., D.V.M., etc. For those who have a health professional degree, the proposed training may be used to satisfy a portion of the degree requirements for a master’s degree, a doctoral degree, or other advanced research degree program.

Before submitting the fellowship application, the applicant must identify a sponsoring institution and an individual who will serve as a sponsor (mentor or supervisor) and who will supervise the training and research experience. The applicant’s sponsor should be an active investigator in the area of the proposed research. In most cases, the postdoctoral fellowship supports research training experiences in new settings to maximize the acquisition of new skills and knowledge. The applicant should work with the sponsor in preparing the application.

At the time of the award, candidates for the postdoctoral fellowship must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents. Postdoctoral fellowship awards provide a stipend based on the level of experience, tuition and fees if specific courses are required, and an institutional allowance.
