Job Description

The Mechanistic Toxicology Branch (MTB) within the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is recruiting a Staff-Scientist 1 specializing in establishment and validation of complex organoid models for assessing mechanisms of brain development and function.

Research in the MTB utilizes a hybrid basic/applied science approach to address questions related to adverse outcomes due to environmental or chemical exposure. These efforts are focused on developing applied testing systems and strategies based on mechanisms of toxicity that contribute to the development and application of innovative tools and strategies. The MTB laboratory work is project-driven and supports divisional interdisciplinary project teams to contribute to advancing our understanding of the development and application of human cell-based models to assess environmental impacts on nervous system development and the translation between in vitro and in vivo systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

This Staff Scientist 1 position is meant to contribute to the overall research operations of the MTB/DTT. The position is ideal for a scientist who has extensive hands-on experience in the generation and use of human brain organoids for assessing mechanisms of brain development utilizing anatomical/network organization, biochemical, and molecular-based strategies. The Staff Scientist 1 will be responsible for conceptualization, implementation, technical conduction/application, and monitoring varying aspects of projects, integrating new biological-based technologies, as available. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring smooth laboratory operations, training postdoctoral fellows and other staff members in complex laboratory techniques. Responsibilities also include interacting with intramural and extramural collaborators to advance the projects.

As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources as a principal investigator, although they will often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the branch.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Neuroscience, or a related field. Preferred candidates will have at least 5 years of relevant research experience following the completion of their doctoral degree, along with the research expertise and training necessary to develop strategies for conducting and managing complex collaborative research projects. The candidate must be recognized as scientifically active with an established publication record. Appointee may be a US citizen, Legal Permanent Resident or a non-US citizen who is eligible for a valid work authorization. This position is subject to background investigation.

Salary and Benefits

Salary will be commensurate with experience. A full civil service package of benefits may be available. This position includes full Federal benefits, including participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System, a Thrift Savings Plan (401(k) equivalent), health, and life insurance, and paid sick and annual leave.

A complete application package must include:

  • Cover Letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Bibliography
  • Contact information (names, work/email addresses, phone) for 3 Referees from individuals in the scientific/academic community who are familiar with the candidate’s accomplishments, motivation, and skills.
