National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
Intramural Research Division (DIR)
Neurobiology Laboratory
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina
Job Description
Position Overview:
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting for a Senior Investigator to serve as Chief of the Neurobiology Laboratory (NL) within the Division of Intramural Research. The NIEHS is located in Research Triangle Park, near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University and Duke University.
The NIEHS is a premier research institute where intramural investigators study a wide range of important biological questions related to effects of the environment on human health. NL is composed of six independent research groups that study the impact of environmental, genetic, epigenetic, immune and metabolic disruptions on the cells, circuits and behaviors associated with neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Investigators in the Laboratory have expertise in neuronal and glial biology at all levels of mammalian brain organization from genes to behaving animals, particularly as it relates to gene expression, neuronal development, synaptic function and plasticity, ion channel proteins, novel diagnostics and therapeutics for Parkinson’s disease, the inflammatory response to toxicity, and establishment of social behaviors. NL also contains two state-of-the-art core facilities that provide an essential set of services to NIEHS and NIH investigators including advanced viral vector technologies for gene delivery and specialized capabilities that enable researchers to study the in vivo neurobiological and behavioral impacts of environmental exposures and genetic manipulations.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement in neurobiology, demonstrated leadership capabilities, and knowledge and interest in the breadth of neurobiology research, particularly those areas studied by current NL groups. In addition to directing an independent research program, the Chief will be responsible for leading NL and providing strategic vision and direction as the field of neuroscience and its experimental techniques continue to evolve. Principal investigators in the NIH intramural program engage directly in high risk/high reward research with postdoctoral fellows, students, and support staff, and collaborate with colleagues to solve important scientific problems. Applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field, and a demonstrated interest in investigating cellular and molecular processes in the nervous system. This position is open only to current NIH Senior Investigators.
Salary/Benefits:
The successful candidate will receive a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including retirement, health and life insurance, leave, and a savings plan (401(k) equivalent).
How to Apply:
Applications will be accepted through June 17, 2026. Interested candidates should submit materials as PDFs via email to Intramural Applications at [email protected]. All emails should include vacancy number AC1634 in the subject line. A complete application includes:
- Cover Letter including a statement of qualifications for the position and vision for leading the Neurobiology Laboratory
- Curriculum Vitae including bibliography.
- Statement of Past Research and Future Plans (not to exceed 4 pages)
- Three References: Provide the names and contact information for 3 references
For further information about the position, please contact Dr. Anant Parekh at [email protected]. Incomplete applications or paper applications will not be accepted. Review of applications will begin on June 17, 2026 and the search will be closed once the position is filled.
