Each year, NIEHS celebrates all of our fellows during National Postdoctoral Appreciation week. This annual event is sponsored by the National Postdoctoral Association, and is endorsed by NIH as a way to honor and thank the trainees who carry out a very large percentage of research nationwide. Please see below for latest activities.

2020 Virtual Events

Thursday, September 17

9:00 – 10:00 a.m. | FAES Health Insurance Open Enrollment Information Session: Join us as we speak with representatives from the Foundation for Advancing Education in the Sciences. They will address the new vision and dental plans that are now part of your insurance policy and answer any questions you may have. Note that insurance open enrollment this year is September 14 – 25.

Friday, September 18

2:00 – 2:30 p.m. | CommuniTEA: Join us to meet and talk with other fellows in a supportive and welcoming environment.

All Week During September 21 – 25

Daily Photo Scavenger Hunt ($50 Amazon gift card given to the winner on Friday!) NOTE: No government funds will be used to purchase the Amazon gift card; it will be made possible by donations from the Office of Fellows’ Career Development.

Join in Virtual events hosted by the National Postdoctoral Association. Events will include keynote speakers, John Beacom, Ph.D., and Christine Pfund, Ph.D., discussing best practices for mentorship; virtual networking, workshops hosted by the National Research Mentoring Network, and The Postdoc Academy; and other curated events, including the NIEHS NTA's Brown Bag Series on Drug Development. All, including postdocs and PIs, are welcome to join. A full schedule of events during NPAW has been posted.

Monday, September 21

All Day | A Special Tribute to NIEHS Fellows: Be sure to check your email on Monday, September 21 for details regarding a special tribute to NIEHS fellows!

9:15 – 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – noon | Trainees meet with Dr. Kenneth Olden at 9:15 a.m., followed by Inaugural Olden Distinguished Lecture to Promote Diversity, Inclusion, & Scientific Excellence: Meet with Dr. Kenneth Olden, former NIEHS and NTP Director and attend his Inaugural Olden Distinguished Lecture, Economic Inequality and Health, focused on promoting diversity, inclusion, and scientific excellence.

Tuesday, September 22

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. | Postbac Chat: This is an opportunity to join your fellow postbacs to check-in with each other and see how everyone is doing during this uncertain time. This will be an informal discussion for anyone that wants a platform to connect with each other. We hope you will join!

6:00 p.m. | Cook-along with Colleagues: Featuring Filled-dough Foods from Around the World: Join us to cook-along together as we celebrate filled-dough foods from around the world! There will be several recipes to choose from and we will cook together! The recipes to choose from will be: Nigerian fish pie, Indian samosas, potato pastries, and strawberry kiwi pie.
Thanks to Musa Kana, Niketa Bhawsinghka, Elizabeth Martin, and Hong Xu for sharing these recipes and cooking along with us!

4:00 p.m. | NIEHS Trainees’ Assembly and Office of Fellows’ Career Development Overview and 11th Annual Trivia Challenge: As part of this year’s Fellow Appreciation Week activities, the NTA and OFCD will hold the 11th Annual Trivia Challenge! Prizes will be awarded to the winners as well as those with the best team names and Zoom background.

11:00 a.m. – noon | New Fellows’ Orientation with the Office of Fellows’ Career Development: Are you new to NIEHS and wondering how to make the most of your time here? Do you want to learn more about the professional development resources that are available? Are you interested in becoming more involved in the trainee community? If so, please join to learn more... and come prepared with your questions!

noon – 1:00 p.m. | Professional Development Brown Bag Lunch Drug Development: Are you interested in a career in drug development? Do you have questions about how to make the transition or the types of positions available? If so, please bring your lunch and join us virtually on September 24 to kick off our monthly Brown Bag Lunch series, where you will learn about careers in drug development and ask questions of professionals in this field. Organized by the NIEHS Trainees' Assembly Steering Committee, the Brown Bag Lunch highlights a different set of Ph.D.-level careers each month to provide fellows the opportunity to meet with individuals that have firsthand experience.
