Each year, NIEHS celebrates all of our fellows during National Postdoctoral Appreciation week. This annual event is sponsored by the National Postdoctoral Association, and is endorsed by NIH as a way to honor and thank the trainees who carry out a very large percentage of research nationwide.
 Please see below for the types of activities we held at NIEHS in 2018.

2018 Events

All week During September 17 – 21:

Daily Photo Scavenger Hunt ($50 Amazon Gift card given to the winner on Friday)! NOTE: No government funds will be used to purchase the Amazon gift card; it will be made possible by donations from the Office of Fellows’ Career Development.

Tuesday, September 18:

9:00 – 10:00 a.m. | Postbac Doughnut Social and Paper Plane Competition (F193): Join your postbaccalaureate fellows for doughnuts & friendly competition to see who can make a paper plane that flies the farthest! NOTE: Food made possible by PI & Office of Fellows’ Career Development donations; No government funds will be used to purchase food.

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. | Postdoc Science-Themed Cookie Baking Competition (Lakeview Conference Room): Bring your best attempt at ‘Science-Themed Cookies’ to share, and take an afternoon break to chat over milk while eating others’ science-y cookie art masterpieces. The ‘Best Science-Themed Cookie Creation’ will be recognized after everyone gets a chance to vote.

4:30 p.m. | Evening Happy Hour & Alumni Mixer (Hickory Tavern, 1156 Parkside Main Street, Cary, NC): Come join us to celebrate appreciation week with alumni over an evening of drinks and appetizers at Hickory Tavern! (Purchase Your Own) Please pass along this invitation to any NIEHS alumni you may know!

Wednesday, September 19:

9:00 a.m. | Keystone Social Hour & Career Talk (Keystone Building, 2164/2166): Join us in Keystone for a social hour and career talk over coffee and muffins. NOTE: Food made possible by PI & Office of Fellows’ Career Development donations; No government funds will be used to purchase food.

Noon – 1:30 p.m. | WORKSHOP: Wellness & Self-Care: Fellow appreciation week is a good time to reflect on ways to take care of oneself emotionally, physically, mentally, & spiritually. This workshop will share strategies and resources to help you improve your well-being. #ScientistsTakeCare

2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Tentative day/time) | FAES Health Insurance Orientation (Rodbell Auditorium & WebEx): Join us as we speak with representatives from the Foundation for Advancing Education in the Sciences. They will address changes to your insurance policy and answer any questions you may have. Note that insurance open enrollment this year is September 10-21.

Thursday, September 20:

Noon | TWO Professional Development Brown Bag Lunch Options: 1) Academia 2) Industry: On the third Thursday of each month, the Brown Bag Lunch highlights a different set of PhD careers to provide fellows the opportunity to meet with a few individuals with firsthand experience. In contrast to the Career Symposium, the lunch provides an informal and more intimate atmosphere for you to ask questions or just hear more about the career you want! Join us to kick off this coming year’s Brown Bag Lunch series, with TWO lunch options during fellow appreciation week.

Friday, September 21:

12:30 p.m. | Pizza Party, General Assembly Meeting, Group Photo, Resource Expo, & 9th Annual Trivia Challenge! (Rodbell Auditorium & Lobby): Come join your fellow trainees on Monday, September 17 to kick off Postdoc/Fellow Appreciation week with pizza and trivia! NOTE: Food made possible by PI & Office of Fellows’ Career Development donations; No government funds will be used to purchase food.
