When a car-shredding company announced plans to move to a southeast Chicago neighborhood, researchers from the NIEHS-funded ChicAgo Center for Health and EnvironmenT (CACHET) stepped in to address community concerns about air pollution emissions from the facility. Center members collected air quality data and provided scientific expertise to demonstrate how the move may adversely affect community health. Ultimately, the Chicago Department of Public Health denied the final permit needed for relocation.
