“By integrating data sharing into the routine conduct of a project, the NIH aims to shift the biomedical research culture into an era in which data sharing is the rule rather than the exception. Achieving culture change will require collaborative effort on the part of all stakeholders, including the researchers generating the data, institutional officials establishing incentive structures, funders supporting infrastructure and resource development, and others.”

Incentivizing a New Culture of Data Stewardship

Environmental health data are among the most diverse, complex, and challenging in the biomedical realm, encompassing the study of all levels of biological organization at all life stages, and often including non-biomedical exposure information. NIEHS-supported researchers are addressing the need to transform complex and diverse data into knowledge by developing innovative data science and data-driven approaches, including data sharing platforms, integration, and analytics infrastructure.
