My year at NIEHS was an invaluable opportunity to look up beyond the day-to-day grind of medical school and envision a career as a clinician-investigator. It immersed me in the world of clinical research, allowing me to present at scientific conferences, meet collaborators, learn from rigorous journal clubs and seminars, and of course contribute to original scholarship. Close ties between institutions in the Research Triangle allowed me to, for instance, audit relevant classes at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health. Perhaps most importantly, I had attentive mentors that were invested in my professional development and modeled the path toward a successful career as a physician-scientist.”
