The NIEHS Scientific Director’s Traineeship for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (STrIDE) is an outstanding research training opportunity at the NIH. Our mission is to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the environmental health sciences by supporting postbaccalaureate, predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to train within the Division of Intramural Research at NIEHS/NIH. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. The program was initiated in 2006 and the NIEHS Scientific Director has continued to expand the program and professional development offerings over the years. Currently, STrIDE Fellows can be supported through this program for up to three years and may be able to arrange a longer fellowship through their mentor.
Why Does the Division of Intramural Research Provide This Program to Prospective Fellows Interested in Research at NIEHS?
The Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity highlights the importance of this mission: “Research shows that diverse teams working together and capitalizing on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives outperform homogenous teams. Scientists and trainees from diverse backgrounds and life experiences bring different perspectives, creativity, and individual enterprise to address complex scientific problems. There are many benefits that flow from a diverse NIH-supported scientific workforce, including: fostering scientific innovation, enhancing global competitiveness, contributing to robust learning environments, improving the quality of the research, advancing the likelihood that underserved or health disparity populations participate in, and benefit from health research, and enhancing public trust.”
STrIDE Program Highlights
