Worker Training Program

Description

On December 10, 2019, NIEHS Environmental Career Worker Training Program (ECWTP) award recipients attended a joint meeting with grantees from the U.S. EPA's Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training (EWDJT) Program at the California Community Foundation campus in Los Angeles, California.

The meeting provided an opportunity for NIEHS and EPA award recipients to network and discuss current safety, training, and workforce development issues. Topics of discussion during concurrent breakout sessions included emerging climate issues, disaster preparedness and resiliency, apprenticeship models, wage theft, records management, and many others.

The joint ECWTP/EWDJT meeting served as a kickoff for the 2019 National Brownfields Training Conference, which took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center during the remainder of the week. On December 12, during the Brownfields session titled #lifechange: Environmental Career Worker Training Programs, award recipients and partnering organizations with the Western Region Universities Consortium and OAI, Inc. shared innovative approaches that are being used to address workforce training and economic development in Los Angeles, California and Chicago, Illinois. The session sparked lots of interesting discussion amongst attendees, specifically on developing an equitable and safe workforce, building sustainable partnerships, and creating new career paths in renewable energy and solar installation.
