Position Summary

Structural characterization of enveloped viruses by cryo-electron microscopy.

Position Description

The Molecular Microscopy Group at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is seeking a highly motivated, talented and creative postdoctoral researcher. The successful candidate will collaborate with our team under the supervision of Dr. Mario J. Borgnia to learn and apply existing and newly developed methods in single particle cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography and cellular cryo-electron microscopy to the study of various structural aspects of the life cycle of enveloped viruses. NIEHS is part of NIH and is located at the Research Triangle Park, a technological enclave in the Raleigh/Durham area, North Carolina.

The Cryo-EM core has established a collaborative training environment providing access to cryo-EM to research groups from regional institutions including Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, East Carolina University and North Carolina State University. The Core is equipped with 300 KeV Titan Krios, a 200 KeV Talos Arctica, an Aquilos cryo-FIBSEM and a variety of freezing robots. We work in close collaboration with other NIEHS cores providing access to protein expression and purification, viral vectors, NMR, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics. We have access to extensive computational resources including NIEHS and NIH High-Performance Computing and cloud computing.
