The Challenge
The Climate Change and Your Community Environmental Health Challenge is a citizen science project competition created for middle school students to learn and practice public participation and collaboration through scientific research. This is a science-based classroom project where educators can also incorporate collaboration with other core subject areas. The challenge highlights topics related to climate, climate change, and environmental health in North Carolina and aims to explore health effects, vulnerable populations, and specific areas in the state that experience negative health impacts due to disaster events and environmental hazards.
Schools will submit a detailed proposal outlining the problem they see in their community and a proposed solution. The top proposal will be presented at the 10th Annual 2024 NIEHS Women’s Health Awareness Conference. Individuals may receive support to implement their projects within their local community.

WHA Overview
The Climate Change Challenge falls under the Women’s Health Awareness Program (WHA). One of the aims of the WHA Program is to train students, researchers and post-doctoral fellows, and clinical and public health practitioners in community and environmental health research and practice.
WHA is an initiative within the NIEHS Clinical Research Branch (CRB) Office of Human Research and Community Engagement (OHRCE). The program seeks to increase environmental awareness in the communities where women live, work, play, and worship to significantly affect their overall health. WHA provides environmental awareness as it relates to health outcomes for women. This initiative brings education, environmental health literacy, and public health to women of the North Carolina Triangle region and beyond for promoting healthier lives, and environmentally safer homes and communities. Educating the next generation and creating a diverse and multicultural workforce is important to promoting environmental awareness and improving health.

Located in Raleigh, Neuse River Middle School first opened its doors to students in 2020. The school is the newest middle school in the Wake County Public School System located in eastern Wake County. Neuse River Middle School prides itself on being a welcoming environment in which students learn, professionals flourish and the community partners. Neuse River Middle School has nurturing learning environment that creates independent, collaborative, critical thinkers to be productive citizens. Neuse River aims to create meaningful relationships and prepare all students for success.
