Laura Thomas received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Vassar College. She went on to study cognitive neuroscience and graduated with her doctorate from Duke University’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. Laura completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health, where she conducted neuroimaging studies investigating emotion processing in children with severe mood disorders. She then proceeded to be a Scientific Technical Writer for Nora Volkow, M.D., at the National Institute of Drug Abuse, where she wrote scientific manuscripts and technical reports, and provided expert technical advice to NIDA Leadership. Laura was most recently a research health scientist at the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center at VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While there, she directed and managed neuropsychological, neuroscientific, and clinical intervention research to advance knowledge about the impact of combat on emotion, cognition, and social behavior in Veterans. She recently moved back to Durham and took a position as a Scientific Review Officer in the Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, where she helps plan and run NIH grant study sections.
