  • SRP Health Scientist Administrator Danielle Carlin, Ph.D., presented at the 15th International Congress on Combustion By-Products and Their Health Effects, which was co-sponsored by SRP. Carlin's talk, "Current NIEHS-Supported Environmental Chemical Mixtures Studies: Can We Apply their Approaches to Mixtures of By-Products of Incomplete Combustion," summarized the history of NIEHS support for mixtures research and highlighted SRP grantees' important contributions to the field. She also discussed barriers to publishing mixtures work and new metrics to measure the impact of mixtures publications. Carlin will be contributing to a publication of the findings from this meeting.

  • SRP Health Scientist Administrator Heather Henry, Ph.D., was invited to serve as a member of the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable (FRTR). FRTR is a multi-agency group that aims to advance the development and use of innovative remediation technologies through cooperation and information sharing among federal agencies involved in environmental cleanup. The group includes the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and now NIEHS.

  • At an NIH data science symposium, SRP Health Scientist Administrator Michelle Heacock, Ph.D., shared NIEHS efforts to understand what people are exposed to in the environment and whether those exposures affect our health. She discussed such topics as the timing of exposure and the organ or tissue that may be affected by it. The symposium was hosted by NIH's Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) and Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures (LINCS) programs.

  • SRP Health Specialist Brittany Trottier completed an M.P.H. from the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Trottier conducts analyses of research funded by SRP and works with SRP community engagement cores.

  • SRP Director Bill Suk, Ph.D., was invited by Thailand's Ministry of Public Health to present on transdisciplinary strategies addressing emerging environmental health problems. Suk's talk discussed models and technologies to reduce the burden of disease while enhancing economic sustainability.

  • Karletta Chief, Ph.D., of the University of Arizona SRP Center recently shared pollution monitoring results with community members at the Shiprock Chapter House. Chief explained how samples collected over the last two years since the Gold King Mine spill show that metals in the river, wells, and irrigation canals remain below U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards for drinking water and agricultural use.

  • The Act to Ensure Safe Drinking Water for Families in Maine (L.D. 454), sponsored by Representative Karen Vachon, R-Scarborough, was passed by the Maine House of Representatives (117-25) on May 30, 2017 and the Maine Senate (34-0) on June 1, 2017. Records and transcripts show that Columbia University SRP studies on child IQ, arsenic testing, and arsenic treatment, including a study in Maine, were cited repeatedly in testimony submitted in favor of the bill and by legislators during floor debates.

  • Emerging Contaminants in Arizona Water: A Status Report (September 2016)

  • SRP staff and grantees produced 8 reviews and original articles following the April 2016 Central and Eastern European Conference on Health and the Environment, which was co-sponsored by SRP. These appeared in a recently published special issue of Reviews on Environmental Health focusing on environmental health challenges in Central and Eastern Europe and drawing connections to similar challenges across the globe.

  • University of Arizona SRP Center researchers Leif Abrell, Ph.D., and Mark Brusseau, Ph.D., contributed to a report on contaminants of emerging concern in Arizona as part of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality's Advisory Panel on Emerging Contaminants. The report documents available information on emerging contaminants in Arizona's water supplies, including surface water, groundwater, reclaimed water, and drinking water. It also provided recommendations for improving the identification, management, and communication of the occurrence of chemical and microbial emerging contaminants in Arizona waters, with the goal of minimizing risk to human health and the environment.
