Superfund Research Program
December 16-17, 2009
Workshop Objective
There is a critical need to better define the fiber characteristics that dictate dosimetry and lead to toxicity and potential adverse human health outcomes, and to understand the modes/mechanism of actions of these asbestos-like fibers in order to make better informed risk assessment and regulatory decisions. The main goal of this science-based examination workshop was not to answer these questions, but to identify what we know versus what we don't, and then to define and prioritize data gaps and research needs for the research community to allow for moving asbestos research and regulation forward. This workshop should provided the USEPA and the NIEHS SRP with important information in order to better define future research initiatives and approaches. Less tangible, but just as important, was the cross fertilization of ideas and information and professional networking. Both outcomes stimulated the advancement of environmental health implications of asbestos and related fibers.
