Researchers at the University of California in Santa Barbara are developing a method for synthesizing the freshwater toxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN). The synthesis of CYN will pave the way for producing an analytical standard that can be used for accurate, quantitative detection of this toxin with isotope-dilution mass-spectrometric assays. CYN is a particularly dangerous toxin produced by freshwater cyanobacteria, and exposure to it can lead to serious liver damage. Reliable detection of CYN is increasingly important to maintain fresh water and seafood safety.
