Time-sensitive collection and analysis of a marine-derived toxic event

Theresa Gaasterland, Ph.D.

NIEHS Grant: R21ES024105

Researchers at the University of California in San Diego are using samples collected from the September 2013 southern California Lingulodinium polyedrum bloom event for genomic and toxicological studies to evaluate the extent of human health risks during blooms. L. polyedruma is a dinoflagellate that produces yessotoxins that can accumulate in shellfish. The researchers are creating a reference library of genomic sequence information that can be used in future studies to investigate the occurrence and abundance of dinoflagellate species and their genes, particularly those that control bloom initiation, persistence, and toxicity.
