Formed in 2012, the Inter-Center Working Group on Unconventional Natural Gas Drilling Operations brought together 16 Core Centers that reviewed the potential public health impacts of UOG and made recommendations for future research.
Working Group activities included:
- A pilot project led by the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and Columbia University EHS Core Centers that found significantly higher hospitalization rates in Pennsylvania counties with a higher density of fracking wells.
- A cross-training effort between members of the UPenn and Harvard EHS Core Centers to learn how to use geospatial tools to create maps showing where UOG liquid and solid waste is disposed.
- A collaborative project between the Community Engagement Cores at the University of Rochester, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Cincinnati to understand community concerns about UOG.
- Contributing to the development of an NIEHS fact sheet on Hydraulic Fracturing.
