2016 interns
Brandon Konecny, a J.D. candidate at North Carolina Central University School of Law, worked with Dr. Resnik in the summer of 2016. Brandon received his B.A. in Film Studies from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2013. His interests include intellectual property, bioethics, constitutional law, and film. Brandon participated in a seminar on ethical, legal, and regulatory issues related to research involving human subjects, attended local institutional review board meetings, and assisted Dr. Resnik with a research project on conflicts of interest policies of scientific journals.
Dr. Moses Aderibigbe, a Senior Lecturer in the General Studies Department at the Federal University of Technology in Akure, Nigeria, studied research ethics with Dr. Resnik in the fall of 2016. Dr. Aderibigbe has a Ph.D. and M.A. in philosophy from the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria, and a B.A. in philosophy from Ogun State University in Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria. He has published articles and book chapters on justice, racism, poverty, democracy, and bioethics. He plans to use the knowledge gained from his studies with Dr. Resnik to develop research ethics courses at his institution and to promote awareness of the importance of responsible conduct of research in Nigeria.
Dr. Elise Smith is a post-doctoral fellow in Bioethics under the supervision of Dr. David Resnik at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) funded by a joint scholarship from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Québec provincial funding agency for health research (Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Santé in Canada). Her previous studies at the University of Montreal (Canada) include a multidisciplinary BA (philosophy, ethics and law), an MA in bioethics and a PhD in Applied Social Sciences (bioethics option). Concomitantly, she was a member of various Institutional Review Boards for the protection of human subjects, she helped in developing institutional policy for conflict of interest management and was one of the founding editors of a new bilingual Canadian journal called BioethiqueOnline. She has worked on various research topics including research integrity, authorship distribution, dual-use, conflict of interest, publication ethics, knowledge transfer and ethics of valorization (the sharing, secondary use and commercialisation of data and material collected for research purposes). More specifically, her post-doctoral studies will include a large scale international survey research analyzing the various factors that influence ethical authorship distribution (e.g. seniority, power, gender).
