Children's Health and the Environment Program, University of Queensland

Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Children’s Environmental Health

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Children's Health and the Environment at the University of Queensland aims to conduct high quality research to increase awareness of environmental threats and to enhance the capacity of researchers and health professionals to address children's environmental health issues. Drawing on the expertise of a multidisciplinary research team, the Centre's primary objectives are to establish links between specific environmental exposures and health outcomes and promote action towards healthier and safer environments for the children of today and adults of the future.

As a hub in an international network for children's environmental health, the University of Queensland Centre is:

  • Building global capacity for research on children's environmental health by training scientists in low-income countries.
  • Assisting with the development and coordination of the WHO Network for Children's Environmental Health to increase collaboration among researchers and provide WHO more effective and actionable guidance on children's environmental health issues.
  • Setting a research agenda and describing the health effects of children's exposure to electronic waste (e-waste).
  • Developing communication strategies to increase awareness about prevention of environmental exposures and related diseases in children.
