Comments Invited on Stem Cell Guidelines

In the April 23 issue of the Federal Register, NIH announced that it is accepting public comments on its new draft National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Human Stem Cell Research ( NIEHS through May 26, 2009. The guidelines were prepared in response to the Executive Order 13505: Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells issued by President Barack Obama on March 9.

According to the announcement ( NIEHS, the Guidelines describe the circumstances under which human embryonic stem cells ( NIEHSare eligible for use in NIH-funded research. They also include a section on uses of human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells that are ineligible for NIH funding.

The announcement includes a web site where comments may be submitted electronically. Comments can also be submitted by mail at the following address:
