July 31-August 1, 2012
The NIEHS Centers for Nanotechnology Health Implications Research (NCNHIR) Consortium was established in 2010 to support efforts to understand how physical and chemical characteristics of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) influence their interactions with biological systems and how these effects impact human health.
The NCNHIR Consortium is an interdisciplinary program consisting 5 U19 and 3 U01 Cooperative Centers along with other active grantees funded through Nanotechnology Environmental Health and Safety (Nano-EHS) program. The NIEHS also established contractual agreements for nanomaterial characterization and an informational database to support this consortium. The overarching goals of these efforts are to gain fundamental understanding on the interactions of ENMs with biological systems to better understand potential health risks associated with ENM exposure. These findings will also guide safe development and use of Nanotechnology.
The fourth Bi-annual meeting of this consortium will focus largely on progress of the Project 3 risk assessment modeling programs. There will be discussion of experimental progress using consortium nanomaterials, and poster sessions to display new research developments. There will be presentations from outside speakers focusing on nanomedicine and the development of green nanotechnologies. The meeting will conclude with update presentations from center directors during the Steering Committee session.
