Clinical Investigation in Host Defense Group

The Immunity, Inflammation and Disease Laboratory of NIEHS is looking for a Staff Scientist for the Clinical Investigation in Host Defense Group under the group leader, Dr. Michael Fessler. The research focus of this group is in defining mechanisms of the innate immune response. Studies utilize in vivo mouse models, cell/molecular biology, genetic approaches, and biochemical techniques, and also translate findings using human/clinical specimens, when possible. A current research focus of particular interest is in defining roles for mitochondria in control of the interferon response. A Staff Scientist is an NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. Staff Scientists should be capable of independently designing experiments, but do not have responsibilities for initiating new research programs. The Staff Scientist in this position serves as a laboratory leader under the guidance of Dr. Michael Fessler, Principal Investigator, to conduct independent research, and to mentor postdoctoral fellows and other laboratory trainees.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- a doctoral degree in biological and/or biomedical sciences
- 3+ years of postdoctoral research fellowship experience
- an outstanding publication record
- technical expertise in flow cytometry and in functional evaluation of innate immune cell (e.g., macrophage) populations harvested from rodent models, as well as cell culture-based biochemical studies
- a background in mitochondrial biology, including mitophagy, ideally including its regulation of innate immune responses (e.g., interferon induction)
- a background in interferon-inducible GTPases and/or other interferon response genes is preferred
The successful candidate must also have outstanding interpersonal skills, teamwork, excellent oral and written communication abilities, and experience with mentoring.
Salary/Benefits: The successful candidate for this position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments with full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent).
