Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Copeland Lab at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIESH), National Institutes of Health (NIH) to mitochondrial DNA replication and disease and mitochondrial DNA mutagenesis.
Mutations in mitochondrial DNA cause a wide range of neuromuscular disorders and the role of DNA replication in this process is poorly understood. The Copeland Lab uses biochemistry, structural biology and bioinformatics to study the proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA replication and how these proteins participate in mutagenesis. For additional information, please visit the group’s website.
Successful candidates will undertake several exciting projects. The first project will used biochemistry and structural biology (CryoEM and X-ray crystallography) to interrogate the proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA replication. The second project will combine cell biology with bioinformatics of Next Generation Sequencing data to investigate mutagenic processes in mitochondrial DNA.
Qualifcations: Candidates must have obtained a Ph.D. degree in biological sciences or a related discipline within the last 5 years, with a strong background in structural biology, protein biochemistry and/or molecular biology. Excellent communications skills and the ability to work on a variety of projects are essential.
Location: NIEHS main campus is in the Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina. RTP is the largest research park in the U.S. located between Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill, and is ~20-minute drive from Duke University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University.
Stipend/Benefits: Successful candidates will be offered competitive stipend/salary commensurate with number of years of postdoctoral experience and accomplishments. Postdoctoral fellows are considered as professionals-in-training and are not classified as NIH employees. Medical insurance is provided.
To Apply: Please email the following to Bill Copeland, Ph.D., Senior Investigator and Chief, Genome Integrity and Structural Biology Laboratory, Mitochondrial DNA Replication group:
- Curriculum vitae
- One-page statement of research interests
- Names of three references
The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.
