The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking two candidates to fill the positions of Staff Scientist Core Managers for the Viral Vector (Neurobiology Laboratory) and the Cryo-electron Microscopy (Genome Integrity & Structural Biology Laboratory) Core facilities. The NIEHS is located in the Research Triangle Park (RTP), a world renowned academic research center in North Carolina and an area well known for its high quality of life.
Core facilities are centralized, shared research resources that provide access to instruments, technologies and services as well as expert consultation to scientific and clinical investigators within the Institute. The typical core facility is a discrete unit and has dedicated personnel, equipment, and space for operations.
Vacancy #NR-101-VVC: Viral Vector Core Manager, Staff Scientist - The primary task of the Viral Vector Core (VVC) Manager is to recommend, develop and/or implement innovative gene delivery methods to support the research needs of the investigators. The VVC Manager will work independently to import and implement novel viral technology, maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the field, supervise personnel and daily operation of the Core, oversee budget and spending, develop collaborative projects, train staff and scientists in applications of viral technology, and be skilled in preparing scientific presentations and publications. The VVC currently packages and validates retro/lentiviruses, adenoviruses, adeno-associated viruses, Sindbis virus, Zika virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and G-deleted rabies viruses. Qualified candidates must be experts who are familiar with packaging and titering methods as they apply to each viral type that the Core offers. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for performing as well as training staff in biochemical techniques such as molecular cloning, genotyping, plaque/focus forming assays, flow cytometry, tissue culture, confocal microscopy, immuno-histochemistry, Western and Southern blots, binding assays and ELISAs.
Vacancy #NR-102-cryoEM: Cryo-electron Microscopy Core Manager, Staff Scientist - The newly established Cryo-electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) Core is used to understand the structure and function of biological macromolecules and complexes to better understand and treat diseases. The Cryo-EM Core Manager will direct a small staff to facilitate the use of the Cryo-EM facility by NIEHS scientists. This individual must have experience managing the installation of state-of-the-art high resolution cryo-EM microscopes; 5 or more years of experience operating and maintaining cryo-EM microscopes, particularly instruments with automated or semi-automated multi-specimen loading systems; experience in optimization of specimen preparation and associated biochemical methods such as protein expression and purification; extensive experience in automated data collection for cryo-EM, both for high resolution single particle cryo-EM and tomography; extensive experience in setting up computing environments, including interfacing with high performance computing and development of automated image processing pipelines; demonstrated experience and expertise, as documented by peer-reviewed publications, in determining structures of macromolecular complexes at near atomic resolution using single particle cryo-EM and experience with cryo-EM tomography and sub-volume averaging; and extensive experience training individuals at the post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate level. The Cryo-EM Core Manager must also maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the field; supervise personnel and daily operation of the Core, oversee budget and spending; develop collaborative projects; train staff and scientists in cryo-EM fundamentals through workshops, journal clubs, and informal interactions; and be skilled in preparing scientific presentations and publications.
In addition to the aforementioned requirements, applicants for either position should have a Ph.D., M.D. and/or equivalent doctoral degree with at least 5 years of postdoctoral research/or equivalent experience in their field, be capable of independently designing experiments.
