Program Description

Partnership for Environmental Technology Education logo

The Community College Consortium for Health and Safety Training (CCCHST), administered by the National Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) in partnership with the Hazardous Materials Training and Research Institute (HMTRI), provides convenient, memorable, and cost-effective training for hazardous materials and waste workers engaged in waste treatment, storage, and disposal; hazardous waste generation, cleanup, and remedial action; emergency response; and hazardous materials transportation. CCCHST membership consists of more than 100 community and tribal colleges and training partners, and annually trains over 30,000 students, workers, and supervisors exposed to hazardous materials. The goal of CCCHST is to make worker training nationally available through the member organizations, whose instructors are prepared through a Train-the-Trainer model program, offering hazardous materials instruction in 30 states and two territories.

Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program (HWWTP)

Under the HWWTP, CCCHST instructors, prepared and supported by PETE and HMTRI's Train-the-Trainer Program, train students, workers, and supervisors to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during hazardous waste site cleanup, Brownfields redevelopment, transportation of hazardous materials, and response to spills and releases of hazardous materials. New programming includes Health and Safety job training for military personnel, retirees and family members who are transitioning to the public sector.

HAZMAT Disaster Preparedness Training Program (HDPTP)

Through the HDPTP, PETE helps the nation be better prepared to prevent and respond to hazardous materials disasters through the training and education of community college and tribal college students, technical high school students, community-based and faith-based responders, and the nation’s first responders. PETE provides a one-week Train-the-Trainer program for instructors and annual Refreshers for trainers who serve a wide variety of students. PETE also provides a one-week internship program opportunity for trainers to work at disaster sites.

NIEHS/U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Worker Training Program

CCCHST serves DOE environmental restoration and waste management sites at Oak Ridge Operations, Tennessee; Portsmouth Site, Ohio; Savannah River Site, South Carolina; Pantex, Texas; and the Los Alamos National Lab, New Mexico. The program provides convenient, consistent, memorable, and cost-effective Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training to DOE contractors and subcontractors. Workers gain the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials during hazardous waste operations, facility decommissioning and decontamination, hazardous materials transportation, environmental restoration of contaminated facilities, or chemical emergency response.
