The Molecular Microscopy Consortium allows scientists from NIEHS, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University to use single particle cryo-electron microscopy and other tools in molecular microscopy to solve macromolecular structures at the atomic level. Cryo-EM requires smaller quantities of material than other structural methods and is especially suitable for the study of hard to crystallize large macromolecular complexes and membrane proteins.
