Nur Ali is a student in the Math, Science, Technology Center at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, KY. She spent her summer conducting research on the use of hydrogels for bioremediation of organohalides under the guidance of Dr. Sylvia Daunert at the University of Kentucky. She helped immobilize a thermophilic enzyme in a hydrogel network containing iron oxide nanoparticles which was then used to dehalogenate compounds through heating in both a water bath and an alternating magnetic field.

In addition to her work in the lab, Nur is co-president of Dunbar's chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society and an active member of her school's Beta Club, Robotics Club and other groups. Nur's plans for the future include presenting her research at science fairs, attending college and eventually pursuing both an M.D. and a Ph.D. in chemistry.
