Joe N. Lyerly
Extramural Support Assistant
Joe Lyerly has been an extramural support assistant with the Scientific Review Branch since 2007. His duties include providing administrative and logistical support to five scientific review officers in the review of grant applications and contract proposals.
Lyerly began his federal career in 2004 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Durham, NC. He served as a medical support assistant in the Orthopedic and General Surgery Departments before coming to NIEHS.
Prior to start of his federal service, Lyerly proudly served in the United States Navy and traveled to many parts of the world. Throughout his 21 year career, he served in personnel administration as a personnel specialist.
As command career counselor, he provided career guidance and assistance to Navy enlisted personnel. In addition, he served as an advisor to Officers in Charge of Personnel Support Detachments regarding Navy retention matters and new programs.
While on active duty in Bethesda, Maryland, Lyerly was selected to serve on the Presidential Inauguration Committee for the inauguration of President George H. W. Bush in 1989. He was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal for his extraordinary service on that committee.
