Program Description
Children are particularly vulnerable to the negative health effects of environmental toxins because their brains and bodies are still developing. Through the Centers for Children's Environmental Health & Disease Prevention Research, NIEHS funds promising research to help alleviate the burden of children's health problems that are associated with environmental contaminants.
The centers bring together scientists from a variety of disciplines to examine how genes and environment interact to cause diseases, such as asthma and leukemia. Researchers at the centers also investigate how being exposed to specific chemicals, for instance, pesticides and bisphenol A (BPA), might affect children's health.
Ultimately, the centers aim to develop strategies to prevent, detect, and treat environmentally related health conditions and to communicate these strategies to families, health professionals, and policy makers
Researchers at the centers work to engage affected communities in research activities and inform the public about the implications of research findings. Each center also has a designated physician scientist who ensures that the research findings are translated into practical information for health care providers. The centers are also dedicated to fostering the next generation of environmental health scientists.
Some centers have received funding from NIEHS for 10 years or more; these established centers have yielded many important insights on children's environmental health. Others, including 3-year formative centers, were awarded funding more recently. All of the research centers are well-positioned to take advantage of emerging areas of science, innovative technologies, and new approaches.
