The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique two-year post-graduate training program of service and on-the-job learning for health professionals interested in the practice of applied epidemiology. Since 1951, over 3,000 EIS officers have responded to requests for epidemiologic assistance within the United States and throughout the world. EIS officers are on the public health frontlines, conducting epidemiologic investigations, research, and public health surveillance both nationally and internationally. EPA Office of Research and Development: Postdoctoral Research Program

In FY 1998, EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) began to enhance its scientific workforce by attracting first rate postdoctoral scientists and engineers into its research program through this new hiring initiative. Over 300 postdoctoral researchers have participated in the program to date. The program offers appointments of up to four years, state-of-the-art facilities, world-class scientific expertise, locations throughout the United States, travel to professional scientific meetings, and active postdoctoral trainee organizations.
