Minerva Mercado-Feliciano, Ph.D., is a research fellow in the Toxicology Branch of the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Her training as a study scientist includes the design and interpretation of toxicological studies. As the lead scientist for specific test articles, she works together with a project officer and study pathologist, and under the advice of a study design team. She also participates in study design teams for test articles lead by other study scientists. Currently she leads several studies of chemicals in consumer products and herbal supplements. She has a particular interest in reproductive and developmental toxicology.
After obtaining a bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences (B.S.) from Universidad de Puerto Rico in 1992, Mercado-Feliciano obtained a Masters of Sciences in Environmental Sciences (M.S.E.S.) from Indiana University while at the same time working at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in the areas of solid waste management, strategic planning and risk assessment. Between 1996 and 1998, she was temporarily reassigned to a special team that developed the strategic planning for the agency and indicators to measure environmental progress for the State of Indiana, including the publication of an annual State of the Environment Report. She was also a volunteer risk assessor under the Indiana Home Lead Assessment Program (1999-2000). In 2001, she returned to school full time to obtain a Ph.D. in pharmacology/toxicology, studying the estrogenic properties of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the laboratory of Robert M. Bigsby, Ph.D.
