Charles Alden is science editor for the National Toxicology Program. He oversees the production of NTP Technical Reports and serves as project officer for contractors providing report preparation services. Since joining the NTP in 1983 he has managed the production of over 400 book-length reports on toxicology and carcinogenesis studies through peer review and publication.

Alden received a B.A. in physics from the College of St. Thomas in 1968 and a Ph.D. in biophysics from Purdue University in 1976. His graduate research and postdoctoral training in the department of biochemistry at Duke University involved modeling of nucleic acid structure and calculations of solvent-accessible surfaces. Prior to joining NTP he worked as a science editor for NASA and for the EPA, preparing over 100 documents on a wide variety of topics. Besides technical documents, he has authored essays and fiction in several literary journals. Once national junior chess champion, he also runs with the Carolina Godiva Track Club.
