Chair: Dr. Scott Masten (masten@niehs.nih.gov) The NTP Nominations Faculty works with the Office of Chemical Nomination & Selection within the Environmental Toxicology Program (ETP) to select chemicals and other substances as candidates for studies of toxicity and carcinogenicity by the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Study nominations come from within the NIEHS, the general public, the academic community, labor organizations, and other stakeholders. Particular attention is devoted to substances for which substantial human exposure is suspected or documented and adequate data is not available to assess potential health risks. The Faculty focuses a broad range of scientific expertise to identify, evaluate, select, and prioritize new substances or issues for study by the NTP and suggests areas of research considered most relevant to address data gaps for agents recommended for study. The Office of Chemical Nomination and Selection provides in-house and contract support to prepare background materials for each nomination. The Faculty reviews these materials in making recommendations on the need and priority for study. In this way, the Faculty provides guidance to the NTP and serves as the first step in a multi-level review process that also includes public and interagency committee reviews and is thus crucial for ensuring that NTP resources are best used to address public health concerns. The Faculty also serves as a liaison between Programs within the NIEHS to increase interaction and collaborative research among Institute scientists to improve the risk assessment process and to develop and implement new methodologies for assessing chemical toxicity. Any Institute scientist who may have a suggestion for a candidate substance for NTP studies is invited to submit their suggestion(s) to the Faculty Chair.
